Fear Te Tara-O-Te-Ika could miss road fix funds

A spokesperson for Coromandel iwi Ngati Whanaunga is concerned the massive flood damage to Auckland could mean Hauraki is pushed back in the queue for infrastructure funding.
The current wild weather brought fresh woes to the region, with a major slip yesterday in the Karangahake Gorge between Paeroa and Waihi restricting traffic.
Mike Baker, who lives in Manaia, says floods and slips are all too common, and roads in the region need urgent upgrading.
“The major concern has always been about what would happen if Te Tara-O-Te-Ika got hit and the other areas down here got hit and Auckland got hit, where would central prioritise their funding, and of course Tamaki has been hit,” he says.
Mr Baker says road closures means Whanaunga won’t be able to make this week’s Iwi Chairs meeting in Taitokerau.
