Rangatahi focus expected from next Ratana tumuaki

One of a new generation of Ratana apotoro says he’s confident the new leadership of the church will be responsive to the aspirations of its rangatahi.
Sonny Tamou has been endorsed by the whanau to become the 8th tumuaki of Te Haahi Ratana, but the process of considering other contenders and consulting with the wider church membership will continue until a decision is announced at the Easter hui.
The position has been open since the former tumuaki, Harerangi Meihana, died last May.
Raniera Pene from Manurewa says at this week’s hui to celebrate the 150th birthday of church founder T W Ratana he has a chance to hear Mr Tamou talking about his plans and the way the church can maintain its relevance.
“For us it’s about understanding what’s relevant for our whanau, what are the needs of our rangatahi at this time and how can the hahi shape itself to meet those needs of our rangatahi, so to hear the new tumuaki is very pro-rangatahi, I think we will see some interesting things in the future,” Mr Pene says.
