Manuka honey fight continues despite legal switch

The Mānuka Charitable Trust, which is bankrolling legal action against other nations using the term manuka honey, says action against a United Kingdom Intellectual Property Office decision is continuing.
Australian producers hailed the Mānuka Honey Appellation Society’s decision to withdraw its appeal as a victory.
But trust chair Pita Tipene says the trust has filed a replacement application.
He says there were technical reasons for the switch, and the trust will continue to act as kaitiaki to protect the mana, mauri and value of taonga species, including mānuka.
The trust is supported by Maori and iwi across the industry as well as by certification body the Unique Mānuka Factor Honey Association, Apiculture New Zealand, and New Zealand Beekeeping Inc.
