BBQ season puts heat on hospital

It’s been a busy season for burns and broken bones at Middlemore.
The chief medical officer for Te Whatu Ora Counties Manukau, Andrew Connolly, puts it down to the usual summer suspects – barbeques, campfires, trampolines and other outdoor activities.
Middlemore Hospital is home to the National Burns Centre – but the number was abnormally high over Christmas and new year.
“And of course they come to us from around the country and it’s stretched our team. Some of them were kids and I don’t know the full details of how they got their injuries bust some of it was the usual things of unfortunately little kiddies being able to get hold of a lighter or a packet of matches,” Dr Connolly says.
There were no fatalities but it’s a warning for people to be careful.
