Hauraki settlement bill finally before parliament

The 12 iwi of the Hauraki region have welcomed the introduction of legislation to finalise their collective treaty settlement.
Pare Hauraki chief negotiator Paul Majurey says it represents the last phase of the journey to settle the intergenerational suffering caused by the Crown’s historical breaches of the Treaty of Waitangi.
Negotiations started 13 years ago this week, and the Pare Hauraki deed was signed over four years ago.
The settlement was then put on hold because of objections to parts of the redress package by Ngātiwai and Taurangamoana iwi Ngāi Te Rangi, who claimed they had exclusive rights to certain areas.
Paul Majurey says many hui have been held between the iwi which only confirmed the tribes have different world views on tikanga.
He says those differences were recognised by the High Court in its rejection of the similar exclusive Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei mana whenua claim over central Auckland, and in the recent Supreme Court Pouākani decision that rigid approaches to tikanga are not justified.
