Abuse payments fast tracked

Social Development Minister Carmel Sepuloni says she doesn’t know how many people are likely to take up the offer of faster redress payments for those who were subject to abuse in state care.
Priority will go to those who have been on the waiting list a significant amount of time, pakeke over the age of 70 and those who are ill.
The rapid payment system is not part of the new, independent redress system, but it’s being done to improve support for abuse survivors while the new system is developed with survivor input.
“It was a recommendation that came from the Royal Inquiry that we get a rapid payment system in place. So, 22 so far from MSD, and 17 have accepted, there’s certainly no number on it as to how many we expect to take it up.” Minister Sepuloni says.
The first set of 3000 claims are being handled by the Ministry of Social Development.
