Borrowed tunes hits sour note at Te Matatini
The national kapahaka festival has warned teams it will take a hard line on the use of borrowed tunes in performances next year.
Adrian Wagner from Wellington Māori radio station Te Upoko o Te Ika says that’s good news for Te Matatini’s broadcasters, who can be up for financial penalties if they broadcast music which breaches copyright.
He says it’s been an ongoing problem.
“Years ago, you would have heard Waka Huia using The Lion King, and their performance was extremely popular. However the rights to that belong to the creators, and that’s where the problem starts,” Mr Wagner says.
The festival is being held in Auckland next February, and Adrian Wagner, says Te Matatini has made it clear teams will have to obtain copyright clearance if they are adapting modern tunes.
