Teachers reject pay offer
Māori teachers at kura tuatahi or primary school level say politicians are out of touch with reality if they think teachers will just roll over.
Teachers have overwhelming rejected the latest offer from the Ministry of Education to settle their collective contract.
Kaareen Hotereni, a Bay of Plenty-based resource teacher, says the offer doesn’t cover cost of living increases it does nothing to reduce workloads.

We are passionate about our mahi, but we are willing to put it where it is…so that’s our next job, is to korero atu ki nga MPs, and make them realise, that they need to put more value into kaiako,” she says.
Kareen Hotereni says the Education Ministry has dropped a plan to ac 53 Maori resource teacher positions across the country – but Maori education still faces serious inequities.
