Zelensky invite irks Green

Greens’ co-leader Marama Davidson is unhappy about the decision to invite Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky to address parliament.
Following a request from Ukraine’s ambassador, the business committee asked the embattled leader to address the New Zealand parliament by video link.
He’ll be just the second foreign leader to address parliament, after then-Australian Prime Minister in 2011.
Ms Davidson says successive governments have had a bias towards popular leaders rather than listening to indigenous groups fighting oppression in places like West Papua and Palestine.
“How are we choosing which international leaders to give that privilege to? Are we actually listening to the grassroots movements in each of those countries? I want to hear from people on the ground in Ukraine, people organising and having to be at the front line of the terrors of war,” she says.
Ms Davidson says the Greens also stand for peaceful resistance and non-violence.
