Download AudioTe Rarawa chair Haami Piripi says a Māori delegation which attended this month’s COP 27 conference in Eqypt hopes to tap into new funding for climate change mitigation.
He says the world has been slow to recognise that the role oceans can play in locking up excess carbon – a tend that’s being called Blue Carbon.
Iwi are seeking $100-million dollars to implement the Hinemoana Halo Ocean Initiative – which is aimed at self-determined and indigenous-led ocean climate leadership.
“Ultimately what indigenous groups have is a long history of association, observation, and calculation around these assets – and they know exactly what to do. We just haven’t been able to do it for a hundred and fifty years,” Mr Piripi says.
He says iwi are also reminding the government their treaty rights cover both Aotearoa’s inland and ocean waters.
