Prison staff shortages months from fix

Corrections Minister Kelvin Davis says there’s no quick fix to prison staff shortages.
Mt Eden Corrections Facility is a third short of its full complement of 438 officers it needs to run, the women’s prison at Wiri is 30 percent short and Manawatū Prison is 27 percent down.
Mr Davis says while there has been a good response to Correction’s advertising campaign, it will take 3 to 4 months for workers to be trained.
“It’s a consequence of people leaving Corrections during Covid as other sectors have also experienced – the Defence Force, teaching nursing, they’ve all experienced it and everyone is out there competing for the same worker,” he says.
