Fuel tax price jump warning

Trucking industry lobby group Ia Ara Aotearoa Transporting New Zealand is calling on the Government not to bring back the 25 cents per litre fuel tax.
The group which represents about 1200 road freight transport companies operating around 14,000 heavy trucks.
Chief executive Nick Leggett says the $120 million a month tax holiday, introduced in April as a cost of living measure along with a discount on road user charges and 50 percent drop in public transport fares, has been major help for whanau and business.
If they come back next year as planned, it means an immediate jump in the cost of filling the tank.
“It’s going to be quite a stark reality for people come February 1 and I think it’s a time the country can least afford it and of course we talk about inflation. The one easing we had of inflation, if you look at all the parts of the economy where prices went up, the one easing was in fuel because of those price movements and also because those taxes were taken off,” he says.
Mr Leggett says higher costs for running trucks end up as higher prices at the supermarket.
