Kupe centre window into Māori world view

Māori origin and creation stories – and how they tie in with historical and scientific discoveries – will be shared at a new education complex that will be opened tomorrow in Tamaki Makaurau.
Taumata O Kupe Maori has been under construction over the past year in the grounds of Te Mahurehure Marae in Point Chevalier.
Kaumatua Rereata Makiha, says Maori have knowledge of the cosmos passed down from their ancestors – but it’s been labelled as myths by pakeha academics and scientists.
“I noho a Io i te aha o te Ao. He wai katoa, he pouri. And that’s talking about Io in ah, that the first thing that appeared in our creation stories was actually “wai” – the water. And recently NASA found this huge kopu of water floating in space that’s 140-trillion times the size of all our oceans,” he says.
Mr Makiha says the centre will focus on the deeds of ancestor Kupe Nuku, but it’s also positioned to share knowledge globally with indigenous peoples.
