Valuation leads to land struggle

The Māori recipient of a prestigious fellowship for indigenous social equity – says she was inspired by Aboriginal land rights activist Eddie Mabo – and the historic Mabo Decision.
Inez White- Faitala, of Te Arawa, Ngati Porou and Tainui, has been awarded an Atlantic Fellows for Social Equity scholarship to complete a masters degree at Melbourne University.
That’s where she gained her property valuer’s licence many years ago – and she says Eddie Mabo was a hero.
“He inspired me! His story inspired me to find a way to use the valuations and my property skills to help take back my country for us, one step at a time, and – because that’s what he did for his islands up in the Torres Strait,” she says.
Inez White-Faitala says she has helped many whanau achieve the dream of home ownership – and the scholarship will help grow that dream further.
