Vote count scrutiny undermines Brown mandate
South Auckland councillor Angela Dalton says it’s wrong for Mayor Wayne Brown to say he has a mandate to enact everything he campaigned on.
Aanalysis of voting show the majority of voters in the West and South voted for Efeso Collins.
Councillor Dalton says Mr Brown has told her she should support him because the same people voted for her, but that’s not what the data shows.
“Those people actually voted for me, they didn’t vote for Wayne and so it depends who you talk to. I had someone make a comment on my page today saying ‘a win is a mandate.’ How can it when only 32 percent of the population vote and of them you’ve got just over 50 percent of the vote – how is that a mandate? So we’ve got to make sure the voices of the south and the west are heard,” she says.
Ms Dalton says as council-controlled organisations deliver their briefings to the new council, she’s seeing Mayor Brown shift from the “sack everyone” stance he had on the campaign trail.
