Takatāpui Hui tackles false narratives on identity
The 32th annual Hui Takatāpui is on this weekend at Mataatua Marae in Mangere – four years after the last.
Organiser Tu Chapman says the hui started in the 1980s with a focus on issues at the time like health and safety, discrimination and high rates of HIV in the community.
It has expanded to encompass other issues, and now includes wider societal and justice issues that affect not just Ngati Uenuku whanau but all Maori.
The hui acknowledges they are Maori first before anything else.
“Our whakapapa doesn’t discriminate and this is what we are trying to kind of embed into our takatāpui community around the false narrative of what our identity should look like,” Chapmansays.
