Mayor Brown’s water plan “reckless”
The Iwi Chairs Forum in Taupo has come out strongly in support of the Three Waters reform.’
Te Rarawa chair Haami Piriri says for too long rates have been spent on infrastructure for prosperous pakeha communities while Maori communities miss out.
He says an alternative plan led by new Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown will reinforce pakeha privilege, and he’s disappointed with the former Far North mayor.
“For a city that relies on 40 percent of its water from the Waikato River and its relationship with the Waikato Tainui people, to set something up in the way they have and not include Maopi people or Maori perspectives is a really reckless thing to do,” Mr Piripi says.
He says working with Maori people and communities through co-governance it the key to a prosperous future for Aotearoa.
