Rangitoto shines at North Shore Ahurea
The Auckland secondary schools’ kapa haka competition is back for the first time since the start of the pandemic.
Johnny Waititi from host Westlake Boys’ High School says there was a bumper crowd topping 5000 for the event.
He says it was a boost for his kura, which is new to the competition, and for Te Raki Paewhenua.
“One school from the North Shore in particular did very well, Rangitoto College we placed fifth overall at Ahurea, and so if you understand what it is like to teach kapa haka and also te reo Maori on the Shore, that is a significant result for our schools on the Shore,” he says.
Western Springs College’s Nga Puna O Waiorea took first place, followed by Te Kura Maori o Nga Tapuwae and Auckland Girl’s Grammar.
