Pitiroi pou of Tūwharetoa
Tūwharetoa Māori Trust Board is mourning the death of tribal historian Te Kanawa Ruka Pitiroi aged 83.
A former teacher at Te Kura o Hirangi in Turangi, Mr Pitiroi was a key speaker for the Central North Island iwi.
He served for many years as deputy chair of the Tuwharetoa Maori Trust Board, and was heavily involved in Māori and iwi initiatives around Lake Taupō.
He also a member of the national kōiwi repatriation committee.
The trust board says it would be impossible to give a full and complete record of all the things Koro Te Kanawa did for his people, so it offered some simple words:
E koro! Kua oti i a koe tāu mahi rangatira ki te iwi. E hoki koe ki ō tūpuna e tatari ana i a koe. Haere e koro! Haere atu rā.
