Lean pickings for Māori as tourism revives
Māori Tourism chair Dale Stephens says the latest figures show tourism is picking up significantly but there’s still a long way to go.
The upward tick is mainly in the cities and the challenge now is to get the visitors out to the regions.
“So that’s a big focus for us now, to get these people who are coming in to the country to realise it’s not just about the main cities but to get to some of our beautiful coastal areas for example, to some of our wonderful rural settlements and meet our people and learn about our tikanga and pakiwaitara,” Mr Stephens says.
New Zealand Maori Tourism’s annual meeting next week will be an opportunity to refine the industry focus.
