Parliament’s carved house reopens

The original Māori Affairs Select Committee, Matangireia, has been reopened after extensive renovation under the guidance of Heritage New Zealand.
It was built in 1922 by Te Arawa carvers at the direction of Eastern Maori MP Apirana Ngata, who promoted Māōri arts and culture revival.
Mana whenua from Te Atiawa, Taranaki Whanui and Ngāti Toa Rangatira were joined at this morning’s dawn ceremony at Parliament by some of the uri of that original tohunga whakairo.
Former Maori affairs minister Tau Henare, who was at the ceremony, says Matangireira should be used more often because it is a taonga for Māori.
