Download AudioNgāti Porou from around the country are heading for Ruatoria this weekend for the Lochore Cup final.
Ngāti Porou East Coast will host Mid-Canterbury at Whakarua Park this Sunday to see who will hold the runner up prize in the provincial rugby series, named after former All Black player and coach Brian Lochore.
East Coast Rugby kaikŌrero Cali Maurice says games at Whakarua are legendary, with whānau flooding into the park on foot, 4-wheel drive and even horseback.
This year is no different with the iwi asking Air New Zealand for more flights into Gisborne to accommodate the influx of travellers.
“There’s busses and vans and every rental vehicle being hired to come back to Ruatoria, to Ngāti Porou- it’s our patriotic Ngāti Porou duty to get to Whakarua Park this Sunday at 1.05,” Ms Maurice says.
