Silver Scroll awards cement Tairawhiti legacy

APRA Silver Scroll winner Rob Ruha is crediting Tairawhiti music titans Ngoingoi Pēwhairangi and Tuini Ngāwai for setting future generations of Māori up for success.
The pair were posthumously inducted into the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame at last night’s awards ceremony in Auckland.
Ruha, who shared the night’s top songwriting prize for 35, his collaboration with Tairawhiti choir Ka Hao, says he feels humbled his own waiata will add to that larger legacy.
“That’s not just us and Ka Hao up on that stage. We’re a part of the dream that Tuini and Ngoi and Apirana Ngata had for us, to be able to sing in our language, to sing about who we are, however the hell we want to do that,” he says.
The Maioha Award for waiata Maori was won by Aja Ropata, Byllie-Jean, Chris Wethey for Te Iho.
