Virtual look at uni piques interest

A Māori education research group is using virtual reality tools to encourage rangatahi Māori to consider tertiary study.
Te Pūnaha Matatini’s Demystifying University, developed in partnership with Skills VR, gives users a walkthrough of campus life using a virtual headset.
It has been trialled at Te Atatū Intermediate School, where kaiako Tony Nemaia says it has resonated with his pupils.
“One of the students said ‘I’d never thought about going to university but now I might be interested in engineering.’ People will say that’s just a throwaway comment but my opinion is that student has now created that sentence, it sits somewhere in the psychology, so how do we now continue building on that narrative,” he says.
