Brown puts Majurey in firing line
Incoming Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown has taken aim at a key Māori leader as he lays out his agenda for fixing the city.
After a two hour briefing from officials on Auckland Council’s finances, Mr Brown called for the resignation of Paul Majurey, the chair of the council’s property management and development arm Eke Panuku.
He said Mr Majurey should follow the lead of Auckland Transport chair Adrienne Young Cooper, who quit on Saturday night after his victory speech in which he promised a tighter rein over council controlled organisations.
Mr Brown said Eke Panuku Development Auckland receives millions from ratepayers each year and returns very little.
However, its 2021 annual report showed it received a total of $30 million from the council to deliver agreed outcomes, made a $41 million surplus on its property portfolio and completed several major infrastructure projects.
Mr Majurey, a lawyer specialising in resource management and Treaty of Waitangi law, chairs both the Hauraki Collective of Iwi and the Tamaki Makaurau Collective of Iwi.
He is also chair of the Tupuna Maunga Authority, which is a partnership between the council and the Tamaki collective.
