Wananga push for tino rangatiratanga
The head of Te Wananga o Raukawa says the country’s three Māori tertiary institutions want a status upgrade.
Raukawa, Awanuiarangi and TeWananga o Aotearoa are working with the Education Ministry on an enabling framework for the sector that recognises there differences from universities and polytechnics.
Merenana Selby says they want a Treaty-based relationship with the crown which would allow them to be more accountable to their founding iwi.
“And it would we believe better reflect what we are, what our purpose is, our uniqueness and more particularly come to a better balance between tino rangatiratanga and kawanatanga,” she says.
Consultations in the proposal close on October 28, and the wananga hope to see legislation enacted before the election.
