Ministry monitors Covid surge threat

The Ministry of Health is watching overseas trends closely for another wave of Covid.
University of Canterbury health modeller Michael Plank says new variants are spreading rapidly in the northern hemisphere, and with our borders open another wave could arrive at any time.
John Whaanga, the ministry’s deputy director Maori, says Covid is here to stay but he’s not making predictions about the next peak.
“From our end, between ourselves, Te Whatu Ora and Te Aka Whai Ora, we’re continuing to watch things day by day, week by week. Certainly as we become aware of any new information, we’ll amend our planning and let people know in due course but at the moment (overall) cases are going downwards, he says.
In the last week there were 9975 new covid cases reported, up 1422 on the previous week.
