Te Whakatōhea Pre-Settlement Claims Trust negotiator Maui Hudson, says now is the time for the Eastern Bay Of Plenty iwi to move forward.
Iwi members are being asked to vote on a settlement offer that includes more than $100 million in commercial and financial redress, 500 hectares of marine space and 6-thousand hectares of land.
There will be ratification information hui around the country which starting with an online hui on October 14 and going to November 5, with the poll closing on November 18.
“People will be able to vote with their voting packs, they will be able to vote online, if they come to the hui they will be able to vote at the hui as well. We want people to be proactive, so if people don’t receive a voting pack, don’t wait, ring and get the elections officer to send you one,” Mr Hudson says.
Maui Hudson says while there are still disputes within the tribe about the deal – overall it will mean a better future for everyone.
