Whakatohea ready for settlement vote

Whakatōhea Pre Settlement Claims Trust chair, Graeme Riesterer, says the Eastern Bay of Plenty iwi is ready to vote on its $100 million plus settlement package.
The vote comes 26 years after the first settlement offer of $40 million was voted down.
An Agreement in Principle to resume negotiations was signed in 2017, and the Deed of Settlement was initialled in 2021.
Along the way it has had to fend off three mandate challenges, with the latest this month being a bid by Te Upokorehe to declare itself a separate iwi.
Mr Riesterer says the time has come to focus on the future and move forward together.
