Diabetes monitors a game changer
An Otago University researcher is calling on the government to fund diabetes monitors for children under five.
Susan Wardell says Continuous Glucose Monitors which replace painful finger prick tests have established benefits for the management of Type 1 Diabetes.
She says fewer than a thousand pre-schoolers have type 1 diabetes, and the monitors would be a game changer.
“And you can imagine it this is a 2-year-old child or a 4-year-old child, what that’s like for the whanau to be trying to interrupt their life, chase them around, get them to do something that is quite painful dozens of times a day on their poor wee fingers,” she says
Dr Wardell says the cost would be under $10 million a year.
