Waipareira added to Oranga Tamariki devolution strategy
The Minister for Children says a partnership agreement with urban Māori authority Te Whānau o Waipareira responsibility is a sign of the future.
Waipareira is the only agency in Tāmaki Makaurau not connected to an iwi to have section 396 accreditation giving it authority to place children and caregivers into residential services.
It’s trialing its new wraparound care model with Manurewa Marae.
Mr Davis says Oranga Tamariki was devolving decision-making and resources into communities, and urban Maori are part of that.
“As far as I’m concerned where there are Maori in need we need to make sure they get the support they deserve so I am not going to say I am hard core iwi or hard core urban – I’m just pro-Maori and we’ve got to do what it takes to make sure our people get the results we all deserve,” he says.
Mr Davis says uplifts by Oranga Tamariki have been reduced by almost 75 percent over the past three years and the number of children in care has been reduced by 25 percent.
