Flash Māori team up for AUT business course
Auckland University of Technology is introducing an under-graduate course in Māori indigenous business.
Course head Ella Henry says with the exception of the University of Auckland’s long-established postgraduate degree, there is no other specifically Maori business course.
She says she had to fight push back from other universities around the country, but she had the full support from AUT and a great pool of Maori staff to draw on.
“we’ve got the largest number of Maori scholars in business, economics and law of any university in the country. We’ve got the fabulous Khylee Quince as our new Dean of Law. We’ve got Professor Aaron Gilbert no Tainui who’s the head of the finance department. We’ve got some flash Maori at AUT and we haven’t been able to teach Maori stull. All I did is corral us all together and say ‘what are we going to teach for our people?'” Dr Henry says.
The course starts next year, and Dr Henry says it’s structured as a series of weekend wananga so people can do it alongside their day jobs.
