HomeGround bringing hope to homeless
Auckland City Mission’s new HomeGround complex is filling fast, with 60 of the 80 apartments now occupied – half by whanau Māori.
HomeGround on Hobson St also includes a shared rooftop garden and community spaces for residents, medical and dental care, and a detoxification centre.
Joanne Reidy, the mission’s new general manager Maori, says being able to offer more than emergency or transitional housing is life changing.
“I’ve seen the transformation of some of our people when they’ve gone from very vulnerable housing to being offered the opportunity to live at HomeGround permanently and just the way in which they go form being slumped to dancing is really heartening. In those moments you really get to see the importance of the mahi that we do,” she says.
The 9-storey complex formally opened last week.
