Field-based training quells growing teacher demand

Tertiary education provider Te Rito Maioha is responding to growing demand for primary school teachers with field-based degrees and graduate diploma in rural areas.
Programme development lead Anthony Fisher says it’s delivered through a mix of online and in-person lessons.
He says many of the tauira are already working at the schools or have children there, so the training becomes a partnership between the kura and Te Rito Maioha, as is happening with a school in remote Herekino in the far north,
“One of our students is been very successful. This is a small school. She has been involved in the school for 10 years as a teacher aide and a parent and now with the support of the principal has taken on to study as a teacher
Mr Fisher says.
