Kura create haka for stage spectacular


Maori performing arts group Hawaiki TŪ is bringing its vision of kapa haka theatre to Auckland schools.
Eight directors supported by specialist arts practitioners and playwrights have been working in eight kura kaupapa Māori and high schools to develop original worked which will be performed at Autaia, a showcase at the Aotea Centre on September 29.
Producer Kura Te Ua says kapa haka theatre differs from other sorts of theatre by the process by which is it developed.
“For a lot of kai haka, we are in wananga for about four or five months of intensive, and it’s underpinned in reo Maori, the ways we create, the ways in which we operate off stage,” she says.
