Gang response too little too late
New Zealand First politician Shane Jones says the Government’s move on gangs is too little, too late.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern this week announced a raft of changes aimed at stripping gangs of the benefits of criminal activity, including extending the Criminal Proceeds (Recovery) Act to cover associates.
The Government has also announced measure to tackle a surge in youth crime, including youth engagement and employment programmes and referring children caught doing a ram raid to the cross agency Social Wellbeing Board.
Mr Jones says Labour needed to have shown a credible pathway out of the gangs.
“The gang population has grown immensely under Labour’s stewardship and it’s a tragedy, both for the people involved, the whanau that produce these young men and women, but more importantly for the communities, because often disproportionately the casualties from gang activity are their own people,” he says.
