Ihimaera steps up for mentor Mansfield

Writer Witi Ihimaera has been appointed a vice patron of the Katherine Mansfield Birthplace Society.
Society president Nicola Saker says Ihimaera has a long history of involvement with Mansfield-related matters, including being present at the 1969 opening of Wellington’s Katherine Mansfield Memorial Park.
In 1989 he published a collection of short stories inspired by the writers, Dear Miss Mansfield, and in 1993 he received the Katherine Mansfield Menton Fellowship, allowing him to work in the house in the south of France where Mansfield did some of her best-known and most significant writing.
Ihimaera says he has a strong commitment to Mansfield’s childhood Māori friend, Maata Mahupuku, and how this friendship meant so much to both young women.
The society’s new patron is Dame Fran Wilde.
