Orakei to host mayoral debate

Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei chair Marama Royal says since the hapū wasn’t able to find a candidate for mayor this time round, they’re hosting the candidates for a debate at their marae instead.
She says Māori are interested in local body elections, if they can find candidates sympathetic to their kaupapa.
“We’re very interested in who will take the position of mayor in our city and especially how they will tackle some of the issues that are really important to our communities including the Three Waters, affordable housing, climate change, go-governance, representation on Auckland Council so coming into Tumutumuwhenua, into our wharenui, could be a great place to host the four candidates,” Ms Royal says.
Tonight’s debate between Viv Beck, Wayne Brown, Efeso Collins and Craig Lord will be moderated by journalist Mihirangi Forbes.
