Best chance now to get Māori on councils
Wellington mayoral hopeful Paul Eagle is imploring Māori to vote in October’s election.
He says at the last election only 900 of the 6000 eligible Māori voters returned their ballots.
“I’m putting the challenge out, I’m putting the wero to our whānau, come on. We’ve got a Māori ward for the first time, mana whenua have two seats on the council, I’m from Waikato Tainui, I’m flying the flag. If you want someone in, here’s your big chance. These things have taken 100 years to get to this stage but I think this is the year so let’s do it whanau,” Mr Eagle says.
While postal voting may seem a hassle, people can drop the ballots in their local library if they can’t find a postbox.
