Pike River lessons inform disaster plan
The Minister Responsible for Pike River Re-entry says it’s important to learn from the disasters.
Andrew Little joined today with Pike River family members and survivors of some of Aotearoa New Zealand’s most significant national disasters to launch new model standards for working with survivors.
The standards were co-authored by the Stand With Pike Families Reference Group and the Public Service Commission. Mr Little says governments need to prepare for disasters.
“There will be families and whanau caught up in it and this is abut making sure they are treated with respect, they are given accurate information, they are supported through their grief, that is what this is about, and that they are at the forefront of everybody’s thinking and work and planning as they respond to the aftermath of an event,” he says.
Mr Little says Pike River survivors felt let down by the state after the 2010 explosion in the West Coast coal mine.
