The Mauao Trust and Tauranga City Council say they’re dismayed new signage on the maunga has been vandalized.
The signs are part of a collaborative project between the Tauranga City Council and the joint administrative board, Ngā Poutiriao ō Mauao,
Board chair Dean Flavell says te reo Māori place names in particular being scratched out.
He says access to Mauao is a privilege, not a right and anyone who is identified disrespecting the maunga will be trespassed.
The council has reported the matter to the police.
