Spirit of ’51 in Kawerau lockout

The secretary of the Pulp and Paper Workers Union says people around the country are rallying around locked-out workers at Essity’s Kawerau mill.
The workers have locked out two weeks ago after they refused an offer that would not keep up with projected inflation over the three-year term of the contract.
The lockout could lead to shortages of toilet paper brands including Purex and Sorbent.
Tane Phillips says the company’s position seems to be driven by faceless bosses in Australia rather than the local managers.
He says it’s starting to affect especially younger workers who don’t have savings to fall back on.
“They’re finding it hard so what the union is doing, we’re helping with food vouchers and stuff like that. I had a lady contact me yesterday, she’s the daughter of a ’51 waterside worker. She’s giving a little bit of her benefit. People around New Zealand are starting to rally around these workers so it is great to see worker solidarity,” Mr Phillips says.
The union is pushing for facilitated bargaining.
