Nelson mayoral candidate giving young a voice

Nelson’s youngest councillor wants to step up to the mayor.
22-year-old Rohan O’Neill-Stevens, from Ngāti Apakura, is completing his first term as a Nelson City councillor.
He says Nelson has an older constituency and voter base, but he has a plan to get more Māori, Pasifika and young people involved in local politics.
“Connecting with those people and bringing them into the fold and elevating their voices is so crucial and that’s something I’ve been proud to be part of and want to continue because what particularly the voice that Maori have to offer is so crucial both in upholding the partnership at the heart of the country but also getting good results for our community,” Mr O’Neill-Stevens says.
