Kanapu to boost Māori research capability


The Government is putting $6.5m towards a Māori-led initiative on a mission to encourage research, science and innovation talent and leadership across te ao Māori.
Kanapu executive director Vanessa Clark from the University of Waikato says the pūtea is a small step towards getting Māori ways recognised and adopted when it comes to the sciences.
“By taking a by Māori, for Māori approach to capacity and capability building of Māori researchers, Māori scientists, we can actually extend the reach into our communities, so touch our hapū, touch our iwi, touch our community-based practitioners as well as our Māori organisations and businesses,” she says.
Kanapu is a project of Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga, the Centre for Māori Research Excellence.
