Koroneihana brings together kawe mate and country

The motu has been gathering at Turangawaewae Marae in Ngaruawahia to mark the 16th anniversary of the coronation of King Tuheitia.
Tamaki Makaurau MP Peeni Henare, who will be going on tomorrow with the Prime Minister, says Koroneiha has a special place in the country both as a place where whanau and iwi remember those who have died during the year but also where issues of the day and the year ahead can be raised.
He says one thing that keeps the Kingitanga relevant is the way King Tuheitia walks among his people on a regular basis.
“He’s a kanohi kitea and I think that’s really important for relevance and now we get the opportunity to go to his whare, to Turangawaewae, to take our kawe mate and we’ve lost a lot of leaders in te ao Maori over the past 12 months – given these strange Covid times when many of us haven’t been able to mourn for our loved ones, we can come together and do that and the Kingitanga and the king himself allows the country to do that,” Mr Henare says.
