Whakapapa under fire in treaty bill

Green MP Elizabeth Kerekere says a parliamentary select committee should not be a place to argue whakapapa.
She’s upset at last week’s hearing on the Ngati Kahungunu ki Wairarapa Tamaki nui-a- Rua Claims Settlement Bill, where two groups argued their claims were wrongly included for settlement – something the Waitangi Tribunal has backed them on.
Dr Kerekere says the treaty settlement process and particularly the large natural groupings policy is causing conflict and trauma between and within tribal groups.
“What we saw in those hearing, some people said it’s not about money, they don’t want allocation, they just want to say this tupuna was their tupuna. It wasn’t from another iwi. It was their iwi. People are so worried those pieces of legislation go in and put in concrete whakapapa and the crown should never have that right,” Dr Kerekeresays.
