Whakatōhea fights to keep Te Upokorehe in settlement

The Whakatōhea Pre-Settlement Claims Trust is pushing back against a breakaway hapu.
The Eastern Bay of Plenty iwi is holding a vote on whether Te Ūpokorehe is removed from the Whakatōhea settlement, based on a petition claiming Te Ūpokorehe is an Iwi and has never been a hapū of Whakatōhea.
Trust negotiator, Maui Hudson, says that runs counter to the whakapapa, narrative and history presented to the Waitangi Tribunal.
He says the petition was framed in a way that suggested Ūpokorehe katoa supported a settlement withdrawal when the group behind it triggered the vote without first gathering the support of marae and whānau.
Kutarere Marae chair Victor Hape, says that the vote has is about changing the whakapapa of Whakatōhea and does not have the support of all the marae of Te Ūpokorehe.
Voting closes on August 30.
