Māori sports form national body
Sport NZ Ihi Aotearoa is investing $1.225 million over two years in a new national Māori sports authority, Te Huinga Tākaro o Aotearoa.
The Te Tiriti-led partnership was formalised at a ceremony in Wellington yesterday.
Ihi Aotearoa chief executive Raelene Castle says Te Huinga Tākaro will bring together the collective aspirations of the Māori national sports organisations and increase their capacity to support their membership.
She says the Māori organisations play a vital role in supporting Māori participation, performance and success, as well as upholding te reo and tikanga Māori.
Establishment board member Carol Ngawati says Te Huinga Tākaro has been three decades in the making.
The partnership is funded under the Government’s COUVD-19 Kaupapa Māori Response Plan.
