Ruatoria road trip good prep for iwi forum

Te Runanganui o Ngāti Porou chair Selwyn Parata expects a productive few days as attendees head to Uepohatu Marae in Ruatoria for the Iwi Chairs Forum.
The agenda includes resource management reforms, three waters, the implementation of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, Māori access to capital, data sovereignty and the 2023 census, and climate change.
There’s also a chance to grill ministers.
“Nine ministers of the crown will be coming to answer some of the questions iwi have put forwards and to give us a report on our mutual kaupapa we discussed at the last hui in Karapiro in May,’ he says.
Mr Parata says the manuhiri arriving today by bus will see first-hand the poor state of the roads in his rohe.
