Ngāi Tahu gets Canterbury council seats
Environment Canterbury has welcomed a law change that clears the way for two Ngāi Tahu representatives to join the Council with full decision-making rights.
The Canterbury Regional Council (Ngāi Tahu Representation) Bill passed its third reading in Parliament yesterday.
Environment Canterbury Chair Jenny Hughey says it will lead to better environmental outcomes, as it allows mana whenua to contribute their vast knowledge of the local environment to decision making.
Te Tai Tonga MP Rino Tirikatene sponsored the bill.
Environment Canterbury works in partnership with 10 Ngāi Tahu papatipu rūnanga who hold mana whenua status within its boundaries.
